Everything is going up in price… everything but our wages! I don’t know about you, but that concerns us and we need to ensure that we plan wisely and are intentional with our money. One way that we can do that is to save money on our groceries (read more about being international with your money HERE).
One way that we can control our outgoings, is to stick to a budget when we go grocery shopping. Recently, over a cup of coffee with friends, we shared our strategies on how we can do that, I wanted so write them here for your today, so that maybe you can use them to save some money too!
Top Tip Number 1
Plan your meals! Take a look what you do have in your cupboard and see what you can add to make a meal. You may find that you have more in your cupboards that you thought and you may not need to buy that extra bottle of ketchup! When you know what you need, then make a list. You could even go one step further and when the weekly ad is out, plan your meals around the sales!
Top Tip Number 2
Don’t go grocery shopping hungry! Be sure to eat before you go shopping so that you’re not tempted to buy unnecessary food.
Top Tip Number 3
If you can shop online, then do! Find the cheapest delivery slot and start shopping! We have found that by shopping online, you can easily stick to your list and you are not tempted impulse buy! It’s also very easy to see how much you have spent so you can’t go over budget. You may also be able to get some super online discounts too.
Top Tip Number 4
If you can’t get an online delivery and you need to go to the store, then take cash. In my local grocery store, the cashier knows me and I always say, if the total is nearing X amount, then please let me know. I always leave the yummy cookies / cakes at the back of the conveyor belt and if I am over budget, then I just can’t buy them!
Top Tip Number 5
Go alone! I save so much money on my groceries when I leave the family at home. There was once a time when I couldn’t drive so my husband had to come with me.. I left him in the coffee shop as the price of a coffee was far cheaper than all the things that he would place in the cart! 🙂
Top Tip Number 6
Batch cook! When you are making a curry or a paste sauce, then freeze what you don’t eat and use it another day. This not only save you money on your groceries, but time too! Check out some batch cooking recipes from the BBC HERE.
