If you’re looking for easy ways to save money, then you’ve come to the right place!
Read these tips to help you save money, I know they work because I use all of them myself!
By following these tips and tricks, you can:
- Pay off credit card debt / loans
- Pay off your mortgage
- Save more money
- Invest more money
Are you ready? Let’s dive in!
Separate your accounts
Have a current account for your bills, an account for your emergency fund (I suggest an account that’s easy access), separate accounts for your sinking funds. Make sure that you name your accounts with a specific job title: e.g. dentist / Christmas and so forth.

Schedule a money date with your spouse
I get it, time goes by way too fast. If you don’t schedule a money date you won’t have one! This is a time where you can look over your budget with your spouse.

Create your budget on a shareable document / spreadsheet
This makes it easier to share with each other! As the days go by, you can input actual amounts, like how much you’ve spent on food, fuel or the actual amount for bills.

Create SMART money goals.
Be very clear on your ‘Why’. Your ‘Why’ is so empowering! We create posters to go around our house, with pictures around the word ‘Why’ to remind us why we were saving!

Take advantage of trial periods – but don’t forget to cancel
There are some really good offers and trial periods out there, from boxer shorts to beer! However, be sure to cancel the subscription before the trial ends! Otherwise, you could be spending money that you hadn’t intended to.
Cancel unnecessary subscriptions
We feel that we are quite good at cancelling subscriptions but sometimes we do forget! Mark the date on the calendar – or even better, set an alarm on your phone! Plus, always check your bank statements to see if you have forgotten any.
Always check your bank and credit card statements
When my husband and I first started talking about money, he shared his credit card statement with me. It took me a matter of seconds to see that something was wrong. After a close inspection, we discovered that someone else had been using his credit card for TWO YEARS! Thankfully, the credit card company were great and refunded the full amount. So learn from our mistakes and check your statements every month!
Talk to your children about money
You children can be your biggest supporters. Our daughter knows more at 14 years of age than we did in our 40s, all because we have talked to her about our plans and dreams! She totally keeps us accountable too!
Use the word ‘Yet’.
It’s easy to get into a negative mindset when you are on a mission to become debt free (or whatever your money goal may be). You won’t be able to go on a 5 star holiday…yet! There is such power in that three letter word!
Write a shopping list (and don’t forget to take it with you!)
By being organised and only shopping for exactly what you need, you won’t be tempted to buy unnecessary items during your weekly shop. Also, try delivery or ‘click and collect’ orders so you can see the total before you check out. This way you can also delete any unnecessary items from your digital trolley before purchasing.
Don’t shop on an empty stomach
One of the worst things you can do is shop on an empty stomach, without a list. You’ll only be interested in what your stomach – not your kitchen cupboards or your wallet – is saying.
Pay cash for your groceries
This has been a game changer for our food shopping budget! I tell the cashier that I have X amount and I can’t spend any more than that. I put all the necessary items on the front of the conveyor belt. All the ‘treats’ e.g. chocolate and beer, go towards the back of the conveyor belt and if I don’t have enough money, I can’t buy them!

Apps
There are so many apps that have been designed to help you save money. Apps that could help with managing your finances and achieving your money goals. These apps offer a range of features to make putting money aside a little bit easier.
There are also apps to help you save money with your shopping. Instant rewards are offered, along with discounts too.
You should also sign up for store ‘clubcards’ which will help you save a lot of money when you are shopping too. By this I mean the store where you do your weekly food shop. There are big savings to have if you have one…and if you don’t have one, you’ll be paying a steep increase.
Check the reduced section
Another great way to reduce food waste and cut back on your shopping bill is to check out your supermarket’s reduced section. If you go to the store later in the day, you may discover bargains as the shop reduces food before the sell-by dates expire.
Sell anything you don’t need
From board games to books, sell all your preloved items that you no longer need or want. One man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure! Use Facebook market place or Ebay, or other websites where you can sell.
Buy pre-loved
We love charity shops! There are great places to shop for clothes and household items. As well as being incredibly cheap, you are supporting a charity! Now that’s what I call win win!
Leave items in your online basket for at least 24 hours
Impulse buying is a real thing! It’s so easy to click on your favourite online store and have spent much more money than you intended! The next time that you are tempted to buy something that you haven’t planned on, remember to leave it in your basket for at least 24 hours before you buy!
Delete all store apps from your devices
Don’t be drawn into shopping temptation by having store apps on your phone. I don’t mean the grocery store apps, I mean apps like fashion stores, music shops, apps like that! Delete them today!
Unsubscribe from emails from your favourite shops
This is an excellent way to save money! You can’t be drawn into the sales if you don’t know about them!
Take cash!
Using services such as Apple Pay and Contactless is super easy, but what if you left your wallet / purse at home & took cash! This way, you can’t spend what you don’t have! How cool is that!
Introducing a no-spend day!
We love No Spend Days…ok, truth be told, I love No Spend Days! I love them because they make you really aware of how much you are spending. If you want to join a group of lovely, supportive people who are on a No Spend Challenge, join my No Spend Challenge 2024 Facebook group. Be sure to answer all the questions!
In an age where we have our digital cash at our fingertips, it’s very easy to spend every day and go over budget. However, if you implement a strict no-spend day once a week, you’ll soon stack up savings.
Pay off debt
OK, so this is one reason that you may be on a mission to save money, so that you can throw it at your debt. If you’re not debt free and you’re ok with that, I challenge you to look at how much you are paying the banks in interest and ask yourself if you’re happy with that! What could you do with the money that you are currently paying in interest? Dream big…and then crush your debt fast!

Start saving – even if you are on a tight budget
I know that saving may seem impossible if you’re on a tight budget. But have hope, because it can be done! Go and check out your local credit union and see what savings account they can offer. You may be able to start with £1.

Buy cheaper prescriptions and medications.
There are many ways that you can cut the costs on medicines. From getting prescription ‘season tickets’ to buying generic products rather than big-name brands, this article on Cheaper Prescriptions and Medications shows you how.
Save on transport costs
Public transport in the UK can be expensive. If you can, consider cycling or walking to work. If your office has showers, you could even run in, which saves on a trip to the gym.
Get a library card.
Before you click Add to Cart on that brand-new book, get yourself a library card. And if you’re more into audiobooks or e-books, download an app like BorrowBox that connects to your library so you can check out those versions on your phone or tablet.
Take a packed lunch
Start making your own lunch and take it to work. It’s a great money saver!
Stop eating out.
Eating out is expensive! Calculate how much you spend every month on eating out. What if you stopped eating out for just one month…maybe two? How much could you save? You could pay that money towards your debt, or your mortgage… now that’s something to think about!
