What Is a Finance Coach, and What Do They Do?

If you've ever felt overwhelmed by your finances or unsure where to start when it comes to managing money, you're not alone. Many people know they should be doing better with their money — but they're not sure how. That's where a finance coach can help.

    What Is a Finance Coach?

A finance coach is a professional who helps individuals and couples take control of their finances by setting achievable financial goals and creating practical plans to reach them.

Unlike financial planners who focus on wealth management and investment strategies, a finance coach works with you on the basics — the everyday money habits, mindsets, and systems that form the foundation of financial wellbeing.

What Does a Finance Coach Do?

As a finance coach, my goal is to help you:

    • Get out of debt — identifying what you owe, prioritising repayments, and building a realistic plan to become debt-free
    • Build an emergency fund — so that unexpected expenses don't derail your finances
    • Create disposable income — so you can enjoy the things you love without financial stress
    • Develop healthy money habits — budgeting, tracking, and planning with confidence
    • Understand your money story — the beliefs and patterns that shape how you think and behave around money

Think of it like having a personal trainer, but for your finances. Just like athletes use coaches to stay on track, a financial coach helps you define and reach long-term financial goals — providing expert advice, identifying poor money habits, and encouraging strategies that drive you towards financial success.

What Happens in a Coaching Session?

In a typical 45-minute to one-hour session, we work together to:

    1. Clarify your financial goals — whether it's building savings, managing spending, or paying off debt
    2. Create an action plan — breaking your goals into clear, actionable steps
    3. Answer your questions — sessions are flexible and tailored to your specific needs

If you've purchased a full coaching programme, we'll work together for at least three months. During that time, I act as both a cheerleader and accountability partner — keeping you motivated, on track, and celebrating your progress along the way.

Is a Finance Coach the Same as a Financial Advisor?

No — and it's worth understanding the difference.

A financial advisor (or financial planner) is regulated and qualified to give specific investment, pension, and insurance advice. They typically work with people who already have assets to manage.

A finance coach helps you build the financial foundations that make those conversations possible — getting out of debt, building savings, understanding your spending, and creating healthy money habits.

    Who Is Finance Coaching For?

Finance coaching is for anyone who wants to feel more in control of their money. I specialise in helping couples — particularly newlyweds or couples who have found themselves on different financial pages — to get aligned, communicate better about money, and work together toward shared goals.

Whether you've been together for two years or twenty, it's never too late to start having productive conversations about money.
