Celebrating Financial Literacy Month in April

Did you know that 39% of adults in the UK don’t feel confident managing their money?

Financial Literacy Month was first introduced in the US in April 2004 to raise awareness and help people take control of their finances. Today, it is recognised all over the world as a month to raise awareness of the importance of being financially literate.

According to Experian, financial literacy is “a confident understanding of money matters.” This includes knowledge of saving, investing, debt, and credit—essential aspects of everyday financial life.

Let’s face it, everyone faces financial decisions that require some knowledge and a little confidence. By equipping ourselves with the right financial skills, we can make informed choices and manage our money with both clarity and confidence.

Financial Literacy Matters!

Why Financial Literacy Matters

Being financially literate enables you to make informed choices. It’s the foundation for building financial independence and resilience.

Being financially literate means you have a plan for your money and can cope when a financial emergency arises.

It equips you with the knowledge to make informed decisions, leading to greater financial stability, less overwhelm, and more control and clarity over your personal finances.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your current financial situation, I’d love to help you get a handle on your finances.

First, let me share some helpful resources with you—for FREE!

2. Track Your Spending

Make a note of everything you spend to help you stick to your budget and review it at the end of the month. You may be surprised to find a few money leaks!

3. Smart Debt Management

If possible, avoid taking on debt. If you must, be aware of interest rates and ensure payments fit into your budget.

4. Start an Emergency Fund and Sinking Funds

Creating specific accounts for our emergency fund and sinking funds has been a game-changer for our finances.

Before, we used to put Christmas on a credit card and were still paying for it in February and March! Now, we set aside a little bit each month for Christmas (and other predictable expenses), so when the time comes, the money is ready!

5. Save for the Future

Start saving for retirement as early as possible to give your money time to grow. Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world!

6. Live Within Your Means

Try to spend less than you earn by avoiding unnecessary expenses and making smart purchasing decisions.

7. Be Mindful of Credit

Overspending with credit cards can lead to financial overwhelm. If you use credit cards, I highly recommend that you clear the card, in full, every month.

8. Educate Yourself

Learn about personal finance so you can make informed decisions about your money. There are many great books and super podcasts that you can use to help you!

9. Ask for Help

Don’t be afraid to seek guidance from a financial coach (like me!). My top tip would be don’t take financial advice from broke people… like I did over 20 years ago. But that’s a story for another day!

10. Follow Me on Instagram!

Make use of your social media feeds by following me and other reputable money and finance influencers.

11. And finally… invest in yourself!
